Shower and clothes store

Over the years we have learnt that many people do not access our services looking for specific help and support. Instead, it is often primary felt needs such as hunger or the need for a shower that are the reasons for engagement. In meeting these needs we find that trust and relationship is developed between the project worker and client that in time leads to further assessment of the clients circumstances.

Showers

The shower facility is available to anyone who is homeless or who does not have access to alternative wash facilities. A towel, shampoo, soap and a razor are made available free of charge allowing people to wash and take care of their personal hygiene and appearance.

Clothes store

On many occasions before taking a shower, clients will pay a visit to the clothes store and choose a clean change of clothing for after their shower. This can include a full outfit especially in the winter months.

When you consider that Barnstaple has no commercial launderette and there is no alternative provision for a homeless person to have a shower, you begin to appreciate how valuable these services are to our clients.

In 2007 the Freedom Centre provided 960 free showers and gave away 4,500 items of clothing.
